Vertical City
De Rotterdam has been designed at OMA in the late 90's. It took more than a decade till it had been realised. The building represents the concept of the vertical city. Three connected towers with an extensive mixture of program: housing, shops, fitness, offices, hotel rooms, conference accommodations, restaurants, etc. De Rotterdam forms part of the integral redevelopment of Rotterdam Zuid.
The complex opened in 2013. Since then, amongst others, the municipality of Rotterdam houses in the building. De Rotterdam is located next to the Erasmus Bridge and is by its explicit design a landmark for the city of Rotterdam. Carolien Ligtenberg has been in the concept and design team for De Rotterdam @ OMA 1998-2001.
